St. Bruno

Patron Saint of Calabria and Germany

St. Bruno is the founder of the Carthusians. He lived in Germany during the 11th century, becoming a well-known teacher and eventually the chancellor of the Archdiocese of Rheims. He fought against decadence in the Church hierarchy and in 1084 he withdrew to the Chartreuse Mountains with six companions to live as a community of hermits. The Carthusian order still maintains its original commitment to solitude, work, and prayer.
