Pope St. Clement I
Patron Saint of Marble Workers
Pope St. Clement I was pope in the second half of the 1st century. Although little is known about the life of St. Clement, it is believed that he was consecrated by St. Peter. He is known as one of the Apostolic Fathers, a group of theologians in the early Church who knew the Twelve Apostles and helped bridge the gap in Church theology.
Later in his life, he was exiled to modern day Ukraine by Emperor Trajan. When he arrived there, St. Clement performed a miracle, providing water to others imprisoned with him. For performing this miracle while already imprisoned, he was tied to an anchor and thrown over the side of a ship. The symbol of St. Clement is an anchor which represents his martyrdom.
