Pentecost

The Solemnity of Pentecost celebrates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles 10 days after Jesus’ Ascension. We hear of Pentecost in the Acts of the Apostles, and it has remained one of the most revered solemnities in the Church. It is commonly referred to as the “birthday of the Church” because it was through the help of the Holy Spirit that the Apostles began the public ministry of the Church. Celebrations of Pentecost are usually filled with symbolism, including a dove for the Holy Spirit and the color red for the fire and passion for the faith we receive through the Holy Spirit. The Sacrament of Confirmation celebrates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon us today. The Solemnity of Pentecost is celebrated 50 days, inclusive, after Easter, with the extended Pentecost Vigil regaining popularity in recent years.
