Bl. Stanley Rother
Bl. Stanley Rother was born in Oklahoma in 1935. He entered seminary after high school, but struggled mightily with Latin. He was given a second chance to fulfill his academic duties when he went to Mount Saint Mary’s seminary and he was eventually ordained in 1963. From 1963 to 1968 he was a parish priest throughout the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City. In 1968 he went to the diocese’s mission in rural Guatemala. There, he learned the native language so he could better preach and be responsive to the needs of the community. He founded a radio station, a school, and a small hospital, in addition to translating the New Testament to the native language. Stanley was killed in hatred of the faith by an extremist death squad in 1981. Pope Francis confirmed that Stanley was a martyr and he was beatified in 2017.
