Sts. Cyril and Methodius
Patron Saint of Bulgaria
Cyril and Methodius were brothers who were sent as missionaries to the Slavic peoples in the mid-800s. In order to effectively preach the Gospel, they developed the Glagolitic alphabet, the oldest Slavic alphabet. Their translation of Sacred Scripture and celebration of the liturgy to their alphabet is credited with helping spread Christianity in the Slavic areas of Europe. After Cyril’s death, Methodius faced many challenges in continuing his ministry, especially with ongoing papal conflict. He persisted, and eventually, their use of the vernacular was accepted. They are the patron saints of the Slavic peoples and co-patron saints of Europe.
