Sts. Louis and Zelie Martin
Sts. Louis Martin and Zélie Guérin were the parents of nine children, five of whom became nuns, including the future St. Therese of Lisieux. Louis was a watchmaker and Zélie was a lacemaker when they married in France in 1858. With the success of Zélie’s lacemaking, Louis stopped watchmaking to help his wife’s business and to help educate the children. Upon Zélie’s death in 1877, when Therese (the youngest) was only 4, Louis continued to care for and educate his children, including teaching them about the faith. Louis and Zélie serve as role models for living the sacrament of matrimony, parenting, and life in church at home. They were canonized together on October 18, 2015, making them the first couple to be canonized together.
