St. James the Greater
Patron Saint of Spain
St. James the Greater is the brother of St. John the Apostle and one of the three apostles present at many key events in the Gospels. James, John, and Peter were present at the Transfiguration, the raising of Jairus’ daughter, and the agony in the Garden of Gethsemane. Based on the Acts of the Apostles, St. James was also the first apostle to be martyred. According to tradition, his remains are held in Spain, leading to the popular Camino de Santiago pilgrimage and recognition of St. James as the patron saint of Spain.
