St. Bede the Venerable
Patron Saint of English Writers and Historians
St. Bede the Venerable of England was ordained a deacon at the age of 19 and a priest at the age of 30. He was an incredibly learned and scholarly man who spent the majority of his life in the monastery teaching, studying, copying books, and writing 45 of his own. Bede wrote on topics such as history, theology, science, poetry, and the English people. Many of his works survive today and are considered some of the most important works from the 700s. Bede died in 735, and for the wealth of his writings, he was named a Doctor of the Church in 1899. “Through all the observance of monastic discipline it has ever been my delight to learn and teach and write.” -St. Bede the Venerable
