Nativity of St. John the Baptist
The Nativity of St. John the Baptist commemorates the birth of John the Baptist. We first hear of John the Baptist on the Annunciation, March 25th, when Mary tells Elizabeth that she is six months pregnant with John. The birth of John the Baptist foretold the coming of the Messiah and in his life, John prepared people for the coming of Jesus by teaching how to reform one’s life to prepare for the Kingdom of God. Celebrations for the Nativity of John the Baptist are some of the oldest in the Church, dating before the 5th century.
