Bl. Solanus Casey
Bl. Solanus Casey was born in 1870 into a family of Irish immigrants in Wisconsin. Because of illness and constant moving in his childhood, Solanus had very little formal education. After a turbulent beginning to his 20s, he heard the voice of the Blessed Virgin Mary telling him to go to Detroit to join a religious community. There he joined the Capuchins and was ordained. Solanus was sent to New York to minister to people in Yonkers and Harlem, but because of his academic limitations, he could not preach. However, this did not limit his ministry. Solanus was known for his care for the sick and poor throughout New York City, opening a soup kitchen and every week he would celebrate special Masses for the sick. Solanus was beatified in 2017, and many care centers for the sick and soup kitchens in the United States have taken Bl. Solanus as their patron.
