Sts. John de Brebeuf and Isaac Jogues
Patron Saints of North America
St. John de Brebeuf and St. Isaac Jogues were early Jesuit missionaries and martyrs in Canada during the seventeenth century. St. John lived and worked among the Huron for two decades, converting 7,000 souls and composing a catechism and dictionary in their language. St. Isaac was captured by the Iroquois during his time among the Huron; after surviving torture and escaping back to France, Isaac returned to Canada to continue his mission. Both St. John and St. Isaac were eventually captured by the Iroquois and killed.
