St. Wenceslaus

Patron Saint of Bohemia

St. Wenceslaus was born around 907 and became the ruler of Bohemia. He was a prayerful and faithful ruler who sought to unify Bohemia and model Christian values. He was killed in a plot organized by his brother Boleslaus. St. Wenceslaus is the patron saint of the Czech Republic. “Good King Wenceslaus” is an old fashioned, but still recognized Christmas carol that tells of the king’s devotion to the poor. St. Wenceslaus was a martyr for Christ who “had the courage to prefer the kingdom of heaven to the enticement of worldly power.” - Pope Benedict XVI
