St. John Henry Newman
St. John Henry Newman was an active theologian in the Anglican church before his conversion to Catholicism in 1845 and his ordination as a Catholic priest in 1847. Newman was a prolific writer throughout his life with 40 books and thousands of letters surviving today. During his life, Newman played a major role in the founding of the now University College Dublin serving as its first rector. He is recognized as an “absent Father of Vatican II” because of his works’ influence on the documents produced at the Council. He was canonized by Pope Francis in 2019 and today many ministry centers at public and private universities bear his name.
