St. Jerome
Patron Saint of Librarians, Translators, and Scholars
St. Jerome was a Scripture scholar in the early Church. He was very well-studied and was a master of Latin, Greek, and Hebrew. He is best known for translating the Bible into Latin in a text now called the Vulgate, which at the Council of Trent was adopted as the official translation of the Bible. Besides his translation of the Bible, he wrote many commentaries on the Bible. Many of his writings survive today, giving us the chance to read the thoughts from this great 4th/5th century saint. Jerome also spent time living as a mystic, not losing sight of his inner prayer life while focusing on his intense academic pursuits. He is the patron saint of scholars, librarians, and translators.
