St. Gregory the Great
Patron Saint of Musicians, Singers, Students, and Teachers
St. Gregory the Great is a Doctor of the Church and was Pope from 590 to 604. Credited perhaps most famously with the creation of Gregorian chant, the sacred plainchant of the Church, Gregory is also remembered for his iconic sermons, many of which are found in the Office of Readings in the Liturgy of the Hours. Along with Sts. Augustine, Ambrose, and Jerome, Gregory is one of the four doctors of the Western Church. His tomb is located under an altar at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. He is a patron saint of musicians, singers, students, and teachers.
