St. Camillus de Lellis
Patron Saint of the Sick
St. Camillus de Lellis was born in Italy in 1550. At a young age, his mother died and he joined the Venetian army. After serving in the army for a few years, St. Camillus hurt his leg and was unable to work. He gambled away all of his possessions which eventually led him to seek work wherever he could, which ended up being at a Capuchin monastery. Eventually, his work at the monastery led to a conversion of his heart. Camillus was unable to enter the Capuchins because of his leg, but he remained committed to his new life and dedicated himself to caring for the sick. Camillus then became a diocesan priest. Noticing the lack of physical and spiritual care for the sick, he founded the Camillians. As superior, Camillus still dedicated a great deal of his time to care for the sick, and his order continues his mission today.
