St. Bartholomew
Patron Saint of Armenia, Plasterers, and Tanners
Not much is certain about the life of St. Bartholomew. His name, Bartholomaios, translates to "son of Talmai" which is an ancient Hebrew name. Many scholars identify him as Nathanael mentioned in the Gospel of John, which says he is from Cana. Bartholomew preached in India, Mesopotamia, Persia, Egypt, and Greater Armenia. The details of Bartholomew’s martyrdom are not well-established, but it is believed that he was flayed and beheaded in Armenia around 70 AD. It is traditionally held that the place was Albanopolis on the west coast of the Caspian Sea.
