St. Anthony Zaccaria

Patron Saint of Physicians and the Barnabite Order

St. Anthony Zaccaria was a physician and priest from Milan in the 16th century. Anthony had a particular devotion to St. Paul and his teachings on Christ crucified. The love from St. Paul’s teachings was the foundation for Anthony’s work in hospitals and facilities for the poor. When Anthony founded the Barnabites in 1530, the community focused on this work, as well as reforming the systems of the Church in Italy in the beginning of the Counter-Reformation. Today, the Barnabites lean on Anthony's extant writings and sermons for their spirituality and devotion to the sick.
