Mary, Mother of God
Our Blessed Mother has many titles. Her title, “Mary, Mother of God” recognizes that she gave birth to Jesus as both human and divine. Additionally, this solemnity of Mary, Mother of God celebrates the foundational truth of the Catholic faith that Christ assumed human nature even to the point of death on a cross. The title Mary, Mother of God comes from the Greek term Theotokos, meaning “God-bearer”. The title was established as dogma at the Council of Ephesus in 431, making it one of the oldest Marian dogmas. "The Virgin Mary, being obedient to his word, received from an angel the glad tidings that she would bear God.” –St. Irenaeus
