Bl. Nicolas Steno
Patron Saint of Geosciences
Bl. Nicolas Steno was a Danish scientist in the seventeenth century who is most known for his role as one of the fathers of modern geology. He is known for his pioneering study both of rock layers, known as stratigraphy, and of the formation of mountains. Nicolas also made many contributions to anatomy which formed the basis of later research in tear formation. In 1677, he was appointed bishop. During the rest of his life, he focused on using his intellect to help many of the well-known figures of the Counter-Reformation. His works in the field of geology continue to be influential for geologists today.
